Immediate Steps to Take

Follow these prioritized actions. If in doubt, contact a veterinarian now.

1
Assess the situation
Observe from a safe distance. Look for breathing issues, bleeding, or shock.
2
Ensure safety
Approach slowly if safe. If on a road or other danger, call for help instead of risking harm.
3
Use protective gear
Use gloves, a towel or blanket to reduce bites/scratches and calm the animal.
4
Contain gently
Move the animal to a quiet container or carrier; keep it warm and still until help arrives.
5
Avoid local authorities if unsafe
Contact a vet or trusted rescue — some authorities may take animals to pounds.
6
Provide basic first aid
If trained: stop heavy bleeding with a clean cloth, avoid feeding unconscious animals; seek veterinary care.
7
Document & follow up
Take photos, note location, and follow up with the vet or organisation you contacted.
  • For bleeding: firm pressure with a clean cloth. Avoid tourniquets unless trained.
  • If broken bones are suspected: immobilize gently and minimize movement.
  • Use blankets to prevent hypothermia for small/thin-coated animals.
  • Keep transport quiet and secure; avoid loud noises.
