What inspired you to start the Humane Society of Morocco (HSM)?

In 2000, as a concerned citizen, I organized what became the Humane Society of Morocco, to advocate on behalf of companion, farming and wild animals. The organization’s mission quickly grew to include the prevention of cruelty to animals and the care of stray animals.

Our welfare efforts were aimed just as well at wild or working animals as pet cats or dogs. Back in the day, animal welfare in Morocco was still extremely basic, it fell to us as early members to raise public awareness about the proper care, feeding, and humane treatment of animals. This vision as early pioneers continues to guide our efforts today. The road is long and each step is only the beginning. No breaks, just heartaches.

In 2012, I moved to Morocco, and have since rescued hundreds of animals. To meet the growing need, we are considering the construction of an animal sanctuary.

What motivates you?

The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything. I cannot support animal cruelty and every time I am thinking there is an animal out there suffering and nobody is helping this poor soul it fills me up with energy to act. I am fighting to introduce an animal welfare law in Morocco and to implement high Animal Welfare Standards just like in Western Countries. Having a legal base will empower us to fight cruelty and help us change the situation.

For you, what does the HSM’s future look like?

I would love that our charity expands and becomes 100% self-sufficient with more people joining to help us help all animals who need it.

What brought you to the HSM?

During my travels in Morocco, I was deeply moved by the number of stray animals and by the efforts of those trying to help them. I began volunteering with local rescue groups, which led me to learn about the Humane Society of Morocco. The organization’s mission to create long-term, compassionate solutions for animals immediately resonated with me, and I knew I wanted to be part of that movement.

Joining the HSM has been an incredibly meaningful journey. I’ve had the chance to work alongside passionate, dedicated people who share the same goal — giving every animal a chance at safety and love. Each new project brings fresh challenges and new hope for the animals we rescue. Being able to contribute to real, visible change motivates me to continue growing within this amazing organization.

What motivates you?

Seeing animals who once suffered now living happy, secure lives gives me strength every day. The HSM’s vision for a more humane Morocco inspires me to do more — to connect with others, spread awareness, and help create a country where compassion for animals becomes the norm.

What brought you to the HSM?

After moving from Canada to Morocco in 2018, I wanted to continue my work in animal welfare. I had already spent about five years volunteering with another organization, where I discovered how meaningful and fulfilling it is to help animals in need. Once in Morocco, I connected with the Humane Society of Morocco and was immediately inspired by their dedication and professionalism. I joined as a volunteer and knew right away that I wanted to be part of their growing mission.

Becoming part of the HSM family has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The organization’s commitment to rescuing and rehabilitating animals is truly inspiring. I started as an Animal Care Associate and later transitioned into my current role as Foster Manager. Some of my favorite memories include rescuing eight puppies early on and caring for countless dogs and cats through our foster program. Each animal that passes through our care has a unique story, and helping them heal and find loving homes brings me immense joy.

What motivates you?

What drives me every day is the bond that forms between humans and animals. Knowing that I can play a small role in helping families find their new best friend — and watching our rescued animals start a new chapter — is incredibly fulfilling. The HSM’s mission reminds me that compassion truly changes lives, both human and animal.

What brought you to the HSM?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about helping those who can’t speak for themselves — especially animals. During a trip to Morocco, I met Ali, the founder of the Humane Society of Morocco, and was deeply inspired by his energy, transparency, and tireless work to protect animals. Seeing firsthand the impact of the organization’s efforts, I knew I wanted to get involved and help expand that mission.

It’s incredibly heartwarming to see how dedicated everyone at the Humane Society of Morocco is to saving lives and improving animal welfare. From my first volunteer experience, I was amazed by the compassion and teamwork within the organization. I quickly became a regular volunteer and, shortly after, joined the board to contribute more directly. Working with such a passionate team has strengthened my belief in the power of community and collective action.

What motivates you?

What motivates me most is seeing how small acts of kindness can change an animal’s life forever. Every rescue, every adoption, every moment of care reminds me why this work matters. Being part of a team that comes together purely out of love for animals is both humbling and inspiring — it drives me to continue raising awareness, engaging volunteers, and building a stronger, more compassionate community.

What brought you to the HSM?

I’ve always loved Morocco, and when I came here, I wanted to give back to the community in a meaningful way. It didn’t take long for me to notice the large number of stray dogs and cats across the country — many of them thin, injured, or frightened. Their living conditions were heartbreaking: malnutrition, parasites, open wounds from accidents or abuse, and no one to care for them. At first, the scale of the problem felt overwhelming. But I knew I couldn’t just look away. I wanted to find real, sustainable solutions to improve their lives — and that’s what led me to join the Humane Society of Morocco.

Tell us about your experience!

Volunteering and working with the HSM has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It has given me a deeper understanding of compassion and empathy toward all living beings. Every day, I’m inspired by the team’s dedication to rescuing and rehabilitating Morocco’s injured and abandoned animals. This journey has also helped me grow personally and professionally — learning more about animal welfare, leadership, and community engagement. Most of all, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of such a passionate and supportive group of people who share the same vision.

What motivates you?

I’m driven by the belief that we can make lasting change through education and community involvement. By raising awareness and building compassionate programs, we can shape a future where animals are treated with the respect and kindness they deserve. Morocco has the potential to become a model for humane progress — and that’s what motivates me every single day.

With my background in business and nonprofit management, I wanted to help strengthen the organization’s structure and long-term strategy. Joining the HSM allowed me to use my skills to help shape a sustainable future for the animals and the communities that care for them.

It’s been a wonderful and eye-opening experience so far. I genuinely feel that the work we do makes a difference — not just for the animals, but for the people who learn from and engage with our mission. The gratitude of the animals we rescue and the commitment of the team are constant sources of motivation. Everyone is welcoming, supportive, and driven by compassion, which makes every day at the HSM fulfilling.

I’m passionate about building bridges between compassion and effective organization. I believe the Humane Society of Morocco can become more than a charity — a true center for education, innovation, and community involvement.
