Adopting From Overseas

International adoption

Thank you so much for your wonderful kindness in wishing to adopt an animal from the Humane Society of Morocco.

We are very grateful. Adopting from us is one of the most effective ways to support our work as it means we can create space to help another animal in need. It’s also very rewarding to give a dog the chance to feel the love and security they so richly deserve.

The adoption process and transportation costs vary depending on the country the animal is traveling to.

Please select your country of residence below to find out more.

Note: The prices below are based on estimates quoted prior to COVID-19 travel restrictions. The pricing structure may differ now.

Adopting an animal from the Humane Society of Morocco is simple and our experienced adoption team will guide you through each step of the process designed to help you find your perfect match.

Thank you so much for your wonderful kindness in wishing to adopt an animal from the Humane Society of Morocco. Unfortunately, adopting to all countries in the world is not possible.

The process of exporting a dog or cat into certain countries can be logistically challenging and extremely expensive. In addition, some countries have lengthy quarantine restrictions which can be a stressful process for both the animal and the adopter and, therefore, not in the best interests of the animal’s welfare.

If you would like more specific information about adopting an animal to your country and what restrictions may be in place, please email adoptions at spadumaroc dot com. Otherwise, please consider adopting a dog or cat from a local rescue. Alternatively, we would welcome you to visit and volunteer at the Humane Society of Morocco or you may like to consider donating towards an animal’s travel costs, to help them find a loving home in a country where the import regulations are not so strict.

Adopting your animal to Canada is a very simple process and we take care of everything. There are no quarantine requirements, which means your animal could potentially travel to you within 3-4 weeks of securing their adoption. The Humane Society of Morocco charges no adoption fees, and all of our dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. Adopters simply need to cover the cost of the travel crate and flight(s).

Unfortunately, due to recent changes in aircraft regulations, we are not currently able to offer the option of using a flight volunteer to get your dog home. However, we do have the option of sending animals to Canada via manifested cargo. Travelling as manifested cargo has the great advantage that your pet can travel to you quickly and fly at your convenience (i.e. a date and airport of your choosing). The travel cost varies depending on the size of the animal, the airline used and the destination, but typically ranges from $1300 CAD to $3300 CAD (for a very large dog and remote area). Your animal would travel in a comfortable travel crate (with access to water) in a climate controlled part of the cargo hold. When we receive your enquiry we will be able to obtain a quote for you.

Adopting your animal to Europe is a very simple process and we take care of everything! Our experienced adoptions team will walk you through the easy steps.

The first step is for your animal to have a blood sample taken here in Morocco. The sample is then sent to an approved laboratory in Europe for testing to ensure your dog or cat has developed sufficient rabies antibodies. The price of this test is included in the overall travel cost. Assuming your animal passes the rabies titer test (RTT), they can then travel three months after the sample was taken, without undergoing quarantine. The Humane Society of Morocco charges no adoption fee and all of our dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. Adopters simply need to cover the cost of the travel crate, RTT and flight(s).

There are two great options to get your new family member to Europe:

  1. As accompanied baggage with a flight volunteer. The Humane Society of Morocco works very hard to find flight volunteers willing to bring dogs and cats back with them to Europe. We have a very high success rate in doing this to help keep the costs down for the adopter. We are fortunate to have many supporters offering to be flight volunteers.

When flight volunteers are available to travel with your new family member, the cost is approximately €700 EUR to €1000 EUR. The final cost depends on the size of the animal, the airline used and where the flight volunteer departs from. In some cases, the wait time to secure a flight volunteer can be a month or two. However, rest assured we’ll do all we can to make this happen as fast as possible. Our goal is for your new dog or cat to start their new life with you as soon as possible. When we receive your enquiry we will be able to check the current availability of a flight volunteer to your destination.

  2. Flying by manifested cargo. If you prefer, we can send your new family member to you as manifested cargo. This means your dog or cat will arrive with you on your specified date. The total cost of sending your animal by cargo depends on the size of the crate and the destination. The total cost for an average sized dog, including blood test, travel crate and cargo fee is likely to be around €900 EUR to €1500 EUR. Not all cities accept live cargo so should you choose this option, we would verify the nearest airport that is available for your adopted animal to travel to.

Adopting your animal to the UK is a simple process and we take care of everything! Our experienced adoptions team will walk you through the easy steps.

There are two great options to get your new family member to the UK:

  1. As accompanied baggage, for which the travel cost equates to approximately £745 GBP. This covers the blood test, all transportation costs, flight crate, and Ruffwear Webmaster harness.

  2. Flying by manifested cargo. Animals can only enter the UK as manifested cargo if flying direct, which is expensive. The approximate flight costs vary depending on the size of the animal, but typically range from £500 GBP to £800 GBP. The advantage of this method is that your dog will arrive sooner and on a date of your choice. Depending on your chosen airline, dogs can land at London Heathrow, Manchester, and Edinburgh. If your dog travels as cargo, we will put you in touch with a third-party UK cargo clearance agent, with whom you will need to deal direct. You must pay the clearance agent directly. Clearance fees are around £400 GBP for the first animal. If more than one animal is travelling together then the clearance fee for subsequent animals is around £80 GBP. Some agents, such as James Cargo Services, can arrange to deliver pets to your door for an additional fee.

You will need to collect your dog or cat from the animal reception area of the airport and allow four to five hours after arrival time before collecting from London Heathrow Airport (LHR). Check with your clearance agent for information about other airports. The animal will be classified as a commercial import if the adopter cannot prove they have been in Thailand within a few days of the animal’s arrival and an additional duty will be charged. The total cost of sending your animal by cargo depends on the size of the crate and the animal. The total cost for an average-sized dog including blood test, travel crate, cargo fee is likely to be around £900 GBP to £1500 GBP plus clearance fees. Smaller dogs and cats will be less and bigger dogs will be more.

Unfortunately, there are no current travel options available for us to fly any animals into Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Greenland) unless they are accompanied by their owner.

Once flights are available in the future, there is the option to fly to Morocco to collect your pet and travel back with them as accompanied baggage. If this is something that you are interested in learning more about, please email adoptions at spadumaroc dot com.

For further information, please see your respective government’s websites relating to current regulations for animal import.
